Travel: Paco, Manila

Let's be honest, even the most patriotic sometimes leaves out Manila when planning a tour. Having Tagaytay, Antipolo and even Batangas within bearable proximity, blurting something like you're planning a tour around downtown Manila will give you a cringed response. SAD because Manila has a lot--actually, too much--to offer.  The streets are lively and history is reflected in every corner but perhaps due to various security, weather and health concerns, we shun the thoughts of discovering the country's capital.

Travel guides will tell you to see Intramuros in a calesa, Spanish-era style. The most experienced will direct you to try nameless eateries sprawling around the University Belt. And some will encourage you to take a stroll along the Baywalk to witness Manila's stunning sunset. All of these hold no less truth but to really see the beauty of the city, one must get deeper into its streets.

Kamikazee's Jay Contreras and Sarah Abad chose Paco Park for their pre-nup
Spotlight on Paco, Manila. Hands down, Paco is known for the cemetery/park that housed the national hero's burial but the area has more than that. Paco Park is a favoured venue for symphony concerts with its old-world ambiance and a popular location for pre-nup wedding shoots. When in Paco, visiting the Paco Market is also must-do. Novelty shopping and haggling from Chinese-owned stalls outside Binondo is something that not everyone gets to experience when in this part of Manila.

Photography enthusiasts love the dramatic ambiance of the park

Rediscovering the capitol isn't something uncommon but media and word of mouth gives it a very unpleasant rep. If you're brave enough, you can definitely see another chapter of Philippine history and a new character of the city once you visit Paco and its enclaves.
